A new dock is a big investment and something you’ll use for decades. It should fit your boats, your cove’s depth and wave exposure, and how your family spends time on the water.
What to decide up front
- Slip count and size. Plan for the boats you’ll own next, not just today.
- Lift-ready slips. Design slips to fit air or hydraulic lifts from the start.
- Covered or open. Roofs protect boats and add shade, and need more structure.
- Frame material. Galvanized steel and aluminum are both common; your builder can explain tradeoffs.
- Decking. Wood, composite or aluminum, with different cost and upkeep.
- Extras. Swim platforms, ladders, slides, storage, sundecks and lighting.
Permits and shoreline rules
Ameren Missouri manages the Lake of the Ozarks shoreline, and new docks and changes to dock size or location generally need its approval before construction. Dock wiring must also meet code and local requirements. An experienced local builder will know the current process.
Repair first?
If your existing frame is in good shape, repairs may get you more years for less money. See boat dock repair and our dock cost guide.
Common questions
Do I need a permit for a new dock?
New docks at Lake of the Ozarks generally require a permit through Ameren Missouri's shoreline management program. Your builder should handle or help with the application.
How long does it take to build a new dock?
Planning and permitting usually take the longest. Fabrication and installation can move quickly once approved, but busy seasons book up, so starting in fall or winter is smart.
